Kathak Lineage

Pandit Birju Maharaj ( Padma Bhushan)

Born in 1938, Pandit Ji is a master of the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak in India. He belongs to the Maharaj family of Kathak dancers, which also includes his uncles, Shambhu Maharaj and Lachu Maharaj, and his father Acchan Maharaj. He practices Hindustani classical music and is a vocalist. After his retirement from Bhartiya Kala Kendra in 1998, he opened his own dance school, Kalashram in Delhi.

Pandit Rammohan Maharaj

Pandit Rammohan belong to the seventh generation of Kalka-Buidadin Gharana. He started practicing Kathak at the age of six years under his father Pt. Sambhu Maharaj. He was trained by Pt. Birju Maharaj after his father passed away. He is the flagbearer of Lucknow Gharana after Pt. Birju Maharaj.

Pandit Deepak Maharaj

Deepak Maharaj is the son and student of Pandit Birju Maharaj. He is the eighth generation dancer and has performed numerous shows including “Krishnayan”, “Kumar Sambhav”, “Katha Raghunath Ki”, “Shan-e-Awadh” among others.

He is popularly known as the “Bhajan Samraat” (Emperor of Bhajans). Padma Shri for 2012 has been conferred upon him in the field of Art-Indian Classical Music- Vocal by Government of India

Pt. Debu Chaudhuri (Padma Bhushan)

Pandit Devabrata (Debu) Chaudhuri (30 May 1935– 1 May 2021) was an Indian sitarist and teacher. He was conferred the Padmabhushan and Padma Shri awards. He was the writer of six books, composer of eight new ragas and numerous musical compositions. He was a disciple of Mushtaq Ali Khan. He is regarded as one of the leading proponents of Senia Gharana. He was the former Dean and Head, Faculty of Music, University of Delhi.
