The passionate Kathak dancer Sangeeta has spelled a charm by depicting the soulful language with her extremely beautiful facial expression and graceful body movements of Lucknow Gharana. Her vibrant style of dancing illustrates an exponent of this Gharana with the blessings of her gurus and audiences in a very small span of time.

Discovering Passion for Kathak and her Gurus

Sangeeta Majumder is born and bought up in Kolkata, she comes from a family of academicians. Very early in her life she discovered a passion for dancing and chose to make her career in the field of Kathak.

She honed her craft under the guidance of the world’s most celebrated Kathak Guru Padmavibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj’s ‘KALASHRAM’, New Delhi, under the regular guidance of Pandit Deepak Maharaj. She has also been fortunate to learn from Pandit Ram Mohan Maharaj in the famous institution Sriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, New Delhi, India.

Education and Certifications

Though learning in guru-shishya parampara for many years she is a First Class Master Degree holder in Kathak Dance from Punjabi University, Patiala and Diploma with Distinction  in ‘Kathak’ from ‘Chandigarh University’.

This multi-faceted young dancer also holds a Master Degree in English from ‘University of Calcutta’. Presently, she is into research in Indian classical dance.

She is also an empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

Taking Kathak to the Global Stage

Kathak is appreciated all across domestic as well as international stages and Sangeeta Majumder is always proud to be a flag-bearer of this art form. She has been invited to perform at prestigious places like,

1. ‘Manuel Belgrano Auditorium’ of The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancilleria) organized by ‘Indian Embassy, Argentina’
2. ‘Tres de Febrero’ for the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Education, Argentina.
3. Resistencia, Chaco for ‘Council of International Dance – UNESCO’ in association with ‘Indian Embassy’ and in Mendoza at ‘Club Serio’
4. Villa O’Campo- the  house of  Victoria Ocampo, for Indian Embassy. The house is famous for housing distinguished indian guests like Rabindranath Tagore
5. ‘Teatro del Viejo Consejo’, organised by ‘San Isidro Municipality’ in Buenos Aires.

In 2017, she performed in The Tagore Centre, Berlin at the cultural centre of India in Germany. She also performed extensively in Budapest, Budaors in Hungary also conducted Kathak workshops for Indian and Hungarian women. The same year she performed in Romania and The Netherlands. In 2018, she represented Indian culture in London for the High Commission of India and The Incredible India in the United Kingdom. Shortly afterwards she completed tours in Francs, Switzerland, Spain, and Austria.

Social Involvement

Sangeeta is very passionate about Indian culture and various traditional art forms. Her love for this led her to found an NGO in 2011 under the name ’Stings n Steps’.

This NGO is focused towards promoting the art, culture, and strong heritage of India to the next generation. They also conduct charitable cultural events in different parts of India to popularize traditional music and dance among the masses by sponsoring the disadvantaged artists with grants.
